You will find Algeria listed on most government travel websites as a no-go area. Westerners in particular are advised to avoid the country unless absolutely necessary, especially in light of the recent orchestrated attacks by a group suspected of being an Al-Qaeda inspired organisation. Nonetheless, for those who must visit Algeria, there is plenty to see.
Algiers, the capital city of Algeria has seen more than its fair share of violence. Strategically positioned as a gateway for invaders, Algiers has been hotly contested for thousands of years. The Casbah, that citadel immortalised in the song that represents Algiers, was built in the late 17th century and has been passed from blood-covered hand to blood-covered hand with every new invasion. Nonetheless, to see it is an experience.
Continue a little further down the coast and you will pass through the towns of Tipasa and then Timgad, both of which are well-known for their beautifully preserved Roman ruins. Tipasa in particular should delight – this sleepy fishing village loses none of its old-world charms, despite the political turbulence of Algeria.
At the end of the coast is the Sahara Desert: That sweeping and awe-inspiring swathe of sand that encroaches a little further every year. You can take a walk into the High Plateaus that mark the beginning of the Sahara, but it is highly recommended to go no further. There are uncounted numbers of curious folk who have walked into the Sahara and never been seen again.
Instead, enjoy some of Algeria´s beaches. Algeria is lucky enough to have a mild, Mediterranean climate which means that swimming is relatively comfortable all year round and especially enjoyable in the height of summer when August heat can reach over 35 degrees Celcius.
