Colorado Springs is an expanding, modern city at the base of historic Pikes Peak. Tourism is a mainstay of the economy, along with the Colorado Springs Air Force Academy. Many of the city’s residents are active or former military personnel.
The area has long been famous for its healthy dry mountain air and natural hot springs. In 1871, development of the city began; to supplement the arid desert vegetation, the city’s developers planted trees and began an irrigation canal. Soon tourists from the East Coast were invited to enjoy bathing for their health in nearby Manitou Springs’ mineral waters and hotels were erected to accommodate them. The natural beauty of Colorado Springs that attracted these early visitors still attracts tourists today.
Visitors can travel up Pikes Peak on the Cog Railway; from the summit of the 14,110 foot mountain you can see Denver, the Rockies, and the expansive Great Plains. Marvel at the stunning rock formations of the Garden of the Gods, which were formed by eons of weather erosion. Don’t forget to bring your camera when you hike around these magnificent natural works of art; the rising sun striking the red sandstone is spectacular and the park in which they are in has great trails to facilitate off-road sightseeing.
Colorado Springs is one of the United States great scenic wonders. Each year thousands of visitors discover its wonders afresh.
