There is a large minority of Indians in Fiji and the actual official languages of the country are Fijian and Hindi. English, however, is heavily utilised in the tourist centres of the country. Being a tropical country there are a number of foreign health risks one should be aware of before planning a trip to Fiji. Typhoid and diarrohoea are fairly modest risks and every possible care should be taken with food and drink to ensure that it is clean and well cooked. It would be a good practise to limit yourself to drinking water out of a bottle and be careful to cover up any cuts on your body quickly. There are areas where mosquitoes are a real pest and can carry the debilitating dengue fever in certain seasons. Again, whilst on your trip to Fiji, it would be wise to carry with you some form of a repellant and try to ensure covering an adequate amount of your body. The economic situation in Fiji is not the best and their is a fair amount of unemployment in the country. As a result, crime rates are high in certain areas and vigilance should be maintained at all times.
