Perth earned the name City of Lights, when astronaut John Glenn saw the many lights lit by the residents as he orbited the earth in 1962 and again when he passed overhead aboard the Shuttle in 1998. The capital and largest city in Western Australia, the city ranks fourth in all of Australia with a population quickly rising to two million. Though the gold found in this area drew many to the city at the end of the 19 th century, a boom was also experienced in the 1960s when iron ore and nickel proved profitable. Today, the city attracts tourists with its wide array of watersports on the Swan River, inviting greens spaces and historical sites. Try some of the great wines from the region with your restaurant meal, or head out to one of the many wineries for a close up look and taste. Restaurants in the city are plenty and come in all flavours and cuisines, including Japanese, Chinese, Italian and Polish. Perth is also home to the world's best gourmet pizza. Laze on a sandy beach, try your luck at the casino or take in a bit of browsing and shopping in town. Several museums and art galleries offer fascinating collections of Aboriginal artefacts, maritime items and art, and the world's oldest operating mint can also be found here. The Western Australian Maritime Museum even has the winner of the 1983 Americas Cup, the yacht Australia II.
