The Byzantine castle and the collection at the archaeological museum are also an important aspect of any trip to Paphos. As the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite, Greek goddess of love and beauty, you'll also find the Temple of Aphrodite here on the island. Many sites of catacombs can be found in the city. Dating back to early Christianity, Saint Solomoni Church offers spectacular frescoes from the 1100s. Temperatures run high in the summer, attracting sun seekers by the thousands, but winters offer pleasantly cool temperatures that make visiting the city on foot or on bicycle enjoyable. The beach promenade, with the marketplace running parallel, is a great tourist stop.
