| Mauritania Flights - A short guide.
The nation of Mauritania lies in the north-west of the African continent and marks the point where Arab influences begin to give way to the “dark heart of Africa.” The southern regions of Mauritania are home to predominantly Tukulor Africans while the north is heavily dominated by Moors. The mostly Muslim Mauritania is unique in its religious and political freedoms, having open channels of diplomatic communication with Israel, allowing free worship for non-Muslims and having women members of government. This progressive system has not been welcomed by all Mauritanians, and the country has been rocked by a military coup, staged by a more radical branch of Islamic political leaders that toppled Mauritania's first democratically elected head of state.
Despite this instability, and the fact that travellers are strongly advised not to travel to Mauritania following the 2007 killings of two French tourists, the country still hosts its share of visitors. It is the unspoiled landscape of Mauritania that draws most tourists, possessing as it does over seven hundred and fifty kilometres of undeveloped coastline as well as the mighty sweep of the Sahara – home to Mauritania's nomadic tribes who have wandered this hot and desolate landscape for centuries. Between the desert and the coast lies the Senegal River, which provides enough arable land for the agriculturalists who eke out a living of subsistence farming and small profit crops.
