About 860,000 people live in Indianapolis and about 1.6 million people reside in the city’s metropolitan area. Indianapolis is proud to be home to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway where the world-famous Brickyard 400 and Indy 500 races are held each year. In late April, visitors can enter this race course for free to watch the drivers test out their cars and the track, while preparing for the Indy 500. The renowned racetrack has made Indianapolis the “Racing Capital of the World.” Indianapolis is also known as the United States amateur sports capital. The city has several attractions, including the world’s largest Children’s Museum and six official Cultural Districts. The Children’s Museum offers fun activities for kids and grown-ups. The Cultural Districts feature a number of restaurants, clubs, historic buildings, and the White River State Park.
