At the invitation of William Farel, John Calvin brought his religious views to the city in the early 1500s, but was quickly expelled. Boutiques overflow with many designer names, the streets are lined with limousines and the lake is dotted with spectacular yachts. While there is the Escalade celebration in December which attracts many with its costumed parade, the entire calendar is filled with cultural festivities. Museums and art galleries are also sprinkled around the city. The International Red Cross and the United Nations are both based in this worldly city. It is also well known for its banking centre. And, of course, Geneva is the starting point for any great ski vacation at one of the many ski resorts in Switzerland .
