El Salvador Flights - A short guide. El Salvador is home to one of the most volcanically active areas on the planet and the resulting fertile soil has left the country with a lush emerald hue. Though only 8,124 square miles, or 21,040 square kilometres, El Salvador will leave you breathless with its many sightseeing opportunities. Well preserved remnants of the Mayan civilisation can be found amidst the forests, mountains and over twenty volcanoes. Buried under tons of volcanic ash over a thousand years ago, Joya de Cerén is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the area of San Andrés and among the ruins of Tazumal ancient structures of a people long gone are meticulously well maintained and preserved. By bus or taxi, travelling from one end of this small country to the other is made easy. Make your way from La Palma to San Salvador and this four hour journey is about as long as it gets. Heavily populated and with a high crime rate, San Salvador still offers visitors many chances to view breathtaking architecture including Catedral Metropolitana, Spanish façades and the church of St.Ignatius Loyola. Cable cars rides and an amusement park can be found at the top of San Jacinto Mountain. Here you can also enjoy a view of the city below. In sharp contrast, San Sebastien offers serene beauty in a beach resort setting.
