Burundi Flights - A short guide.

Burundi is an east African nation, a tiny republic nestled between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania.

Burundi´s history is a bloody one and it is only recently that it has been taken off most government´s ´Do Not Travel´ lists. Like it´s neighbour Rwanda, Burundi has had ongoing ethnic tension between the Tutsis and the Hutus, which resulted in civil war in the early 1990s. The war dragged on for years and it is only now, after a ceasefire signed in 2005 and a free democratic election that was relatively trouble-free that the country has been declared safe for visitors.

Those that do travel to Burundi are in for a treat. The exquisite natural beauty is unmarred by the long war and nature lovers will delight in the jungles, waterfalls and rivers, filled as they are with the unique wildlife of Africa.

Kibira National Park is rich in wildlife, particularly apes and primates. The area is home to mangabeys, colobus monkeys and chimpanzees, who are equally curious about visitors as visitors are about them. Guided hikes are on offer, with English-speaking guides giving detailed information about the lives and habitats of the Park´s inhabitants.

Although the infrastructure is well below par, and travellers would do well to dress down and leave expensive electronics at home, Burundi is developing facilities for tourists and locals. Restaurants and cafes hug the shores of Lake Tanganyika (the world´s longest lake), giving tourists the opportunity to relax with a dish of local fare and enjoy the scenic surroundings.
