After this conflict, the growth of railroads contributed to the city’s wealth, but in 1904 Baltimore was devastated by large fire. In the 1930s, the city experienced the poverty of the Great Depression. Nowadays, Baltimore offers the hospitality of a small town, with big-city sophistication. Visitors are drawn to its historic past, its interesting architecture, great seafood, and unique attractions. The Inner Harbor is home to several restaurants; blue crabs prepared by steaming are a Maryland favorite.
