Thousands of people flock each year to see the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Some of the events take place at night; the sight of numerous hot air balloons lighting up the Arizona night sky is spectacular. To the east of Albuquerque are the Sandia Mountains, while the Rio Grande is to the city’s west. Take the Sandia Peak Tram to the peak of these mountains and observe the desert below. On good days, it is possible to see 15,000 square miles of New Mexico. Watch the Rio Grande wind its path through a valley filled with cottonwood trees; observe the area’s long dormant, but still fascinating volcanoes. When night falls, enjoy the stars twinkling in the clear desert sky.
