It means St. Joseph in Spanish, but Americans call it San Jose. It comes in at number 3 on the list of California’s largest cities (tenth in the nation). San Jose is more than just Santa Clara’s county seat; it is a vibrant city situated near San Francisco Bay’s most southern tip. These days most people just call it “Silicon Valley.” Originally an agricultural town, that all changed during the 1960s when an influx of newcomers began building homes on the land we now call San Jose. A half a century later and San Jose proudly wears the title of being the largest city in Northern California. In 2008 the U.S. Census Bureau put the population of San Jose at close to 950,000; however, the finance department of the California puts the number at just over 1 million residents. When you combine the entire metropolitan area of San Jose that number jumps even higher to 1.8 million residents. San Jose is the main city of the Bay area when it comes to land area, population, and industry growth.
The city of San Jose was originally founded back in 1777 and dubbed El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe; it has the distinction of being the first recorded town in what was once Nueva California, a Spanish colony. San Jose was previously a land farmed in order to help provide for military personnel stationed at Monterey and San Francisco. San Jose was also California’s original capital city before it was moved to Sacramento. During the 50s and 60s the demand for land increased due to the WWII veterans who were returning home. In the 90s San Jose ultimately gained its current nickname of “Silicon Valley” as it began to swell with its very prosperous local technology industry.
