Baltimore, Maryland on the Patapsco River is one of the United States’ oldest cities. Baltimore’s location on Chesapeake Bay has been a key to its success; its nearness to the Atlantic allowed it to become a thriving shipbuilding center and port. It played a significant role in the American Revolution and it was the home port for the clipper ships and U.S. Naval ships that successfully captured or eliminated several British ships in the War of 1812.
Unlike the U.S. capital, Baltimore survived this war unscathed and with a notable incident to add to its history. It was during the British attack on Baltimore that Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the “Star-Spangled Banner.”
During the American Civil War, Baltimore was torn between loyalty to the North or to the South. After this conflict, the growth of railroads contributed to the city’s wealth, but in 1904 Baltimore was devastated by large fire. In the 1930s, the city experienced the poverty of the Great Depression.
Nowadays, Baltimore offers the hospitality of a small town, with big-city sophistication. Visitors are drawn to its historic past, its interesting architecture, great seafood, and unique attractions. The Inner Harbor is home to several restaurants; blue crabs prepared by steaming are a Maryland favorite. Explore Baltimore’s neighborhoods: Little Italy, SoWeBo with its Bohemian flavor, sophisticated Mt. Vernon, or Southwest Baltimore. You are sure to leave Baltimore with some great memories, no matter what part of it you explore.
