Kansas City is unique because it is a city in two states: Kansas and Missouri. The city is divided by the Missouri River which is a natural border between Missouri and Kansas. Missouri claims the most interesting part of Kansas City, while mundane residential areas occupy most of the part which is in Kansas. Kansas City features Spanish architecture and tree-shaded boulevards laid out in Paris style, while numerous fountains which remind one of Rome, grace most of its commercial buildings. It is no wonder that the city is called “The City of Fountains.”
Kansas City began in 1821 as a fur trading post and became a starting point for the wagon trains traveling to the West on the Oregon, Santa Fe, and California Trails. Cowboys would drive their herds of cattle to the Kansas City stockyards and it became a busy cattle trade center, aided by the building of the railroads and the Hannibal Bridge which crossed the Missouri River to connect the two states.
Today, the cattle tradition has turned Kansas City into a barbeque capital. Barbeque and juicy steaks are offered at over sixty Kansas City eating places. Families can also enjoy the Oceans of Fun and Worlds of Fun amusement parks which border each other and offer rides, water exhibits, and a host of entertaining options. A unique shopping experience is provided at the Country Club Plaza which features Moorish architecture and sparkling fountains.
Lovers of jazz are also drawn to Kansas City. The city’s jazz tradition began after the first World War; Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, and other famous musicians played the clubs in the 18th and Vine District. The city is preserving this tradition; in 1997, the American Jazz Museum was opened in the 18th and Vine District. If you want to see a vital part of America come to Kansas City and enjoy its food and rich heritage.
