A Viking of legendary status, Ingolfur Arnarson reached this northern peninsula and saw smoke rising through the air. The name Reykjavik, meaning smoky bay, was hence given to this Atlantic strip of land. With many geysers spewing up heated water and geothermal springs bubbling over with steam, rather than smoke, was what he’d seen emanating from the ground. Today, these natural resources prevent the need to burn fuels to keep Icelandic people warm. It’s a great way of keeping the clear blue skies of Iceland’s capital as crisp as can be.
Of course Mother Nature often has her way with those blue skies and brings Reykjavik its fair share of rainy weather. And when winter rolls around, Reykjavik’s northern location means only brief glimpses of the sun and clear blues.
Cool temperatures, however, have never kept the people of Reykjavik from having a good time. Pubs and nightclubs draw locals and visitors to the fun and merriment to be had at these hot spots, and even more so in the long, long days of summer. An easy and laid back way of life, welcoming locals and a love of fun have an increasingly large number of tourist choosing Iceland as their vacation destination. Add cultural events, captivating treks in and around the city and a dip in one of those geothermal baths and your trip is complete.
